For Ability WA customer Eleana, finding the right home wasn't just a change of address; it was about finding a bespoke environment that matched her evolving goals.

Eleana has been part of the Ability WA community since the age of three. Like many people, her needs and goals have changed over time and so has the support and setting she calls home.

Eleana's initial years in shared accommodation gave her community, connection, and a foundation to build on. But as her independence grew, so did her need for an environment that could match it. Known for her warmth, empathy, and remarkable ability to connect with others, particularly people who are non-verbal, Eleana needed a home that would give her the space to thrive on her own terms.

For Eleana, independence is found in everyday moments that add up to a life lived on her own terms. Booking her own appointments. Ringing a friend for a chat. Calling a taxi to explore her local community. Even relaxing with her housemates as they watch an episode of her favourite TV show, The Crown.

These are the moments that matter, and they’re exactly what the Ability WA team have in mind when we say “we get it.”

Eleana’s SDA home
Working collaboratively with Eleana, her family, and her broader support network, Ability WA identified a Specialist Disability Accoumidation (SDA) home as the right next step, funded through the NDIS.

“Ability is a good organisation for a good service,” Eleana says. “They have made my life very easy, especially when I moved from my old house to this house.”

The four-bedroom SDA home offers a hybrid living model. Allowing the privacy and calm of a personalised space, alongside shared supports and 24/7 care.

Safety first, independence always
For Eleana, feeling safe at home isn’t separate from feeling independent. It’s the foundation it’s built on.

“Safety in my home is very important,” she explains, “because if I get hurt myself, I can’t help others.”

We agree that independence only works when it’s supported by the right safeguards, and that’s been front of mind in how Eleana’s home and supports have been set up.

A smart home
Eleana’s independence starts right at the front door. A face-activated entry system means she can come and go as she pleases, without needing to wait on someone else to let her in. It’s a small piece of technology, but it makes a big statement: this is her home, and she should be able to move through it freely.

Perhaps the biggest shift in Eleana’s day-to-day life has come from her specially adjusted mobile phone. Set up to suit the way she interacts with technology, it has become, in her own words, her connection to the outside world.

With it, Eleana can:

• Book her own appointments, without waiting on someone else to organise her schedule
• Socialise with friends, keeping relationships strong and staying connected on her terms
• Call a taxi whenever she wants to head out and be part of the community
• Control the TV in her home, choosing what she watches and when
