Ability WA is partnering with quality and trusted Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) providers to offer more choice about where and how you live. With Ability WA and our SDA partners you can combine a new purpose built home – designed for function, comfort and control – with quality living supports to give you the confidence to reach your goals and live your way.
To be eligible for SDA, you must have
- Extreme functional impairment - you need lots of support from someone with many of your daily tasks such as moving around at home, your personal care, meal preparation, or looking after yourself. This is in addition to any assistive technology or home modifications; and/or
- Very high support needs - you need a lot of one-on-one support, for a significant part of the day from paid support workers.
If you are not eligible for SDA, Ability WA has many other housing options you may be able to access with our Community Housing providers.
Our Home and Living Team will assist you to find suitable housing and if your preference is to live with others with disability, we’ll match you with people you are most compatible with. Our range of partnerships with trusted SDA and Community Housing providers means we have access to a diverse range of high quality housing across Perth. We work collaboratively with you to plan what you need to live the lifestyle you choose and feel safe and connected.
As your Supported Independent Living provider, your Coordinator will work with you to select a team of support workers and plan for your move. Once you’ve moved in, your team will continue to build a strong and honest relationship with you to understand how you like to be supported and your vision for how you want to live.
If you need assistance to maintain your health, our Support Workers are trained in basic wound care, most forms of medication administration and enteral feeding. We have a team of Enrolled Nurses and Registered Nurses who can visit your home or work daily to meet your health needs. Our Therapist, Dieticians, Social Workers and Positive Behaviour Support Clinicians are also on hand to support you.
If you’re looking for a living arrangement which is designed only for you, we can support you to explore, design and build a living arrangement where you have access to support when you need it, by a team created just for you. This could look like living with a student, individual or another family in a homeshare arrangement, either in your home or someone else’s. Companionship and assistance with personal care, meals, errands and other daily tasks would be provided by a mixture of your housemate/s and Support Workers, based on what you decide.
This arrangement can take a while to get move-in ready, but is a great option if you want to be supported by a housemate and not by around-the-clock Support Workers.
If you are looking for an urgent Home and Living option with 24 hour Support Workers, we may be able to help. Contact our Home and Living Team to enquire about our current options.
If you are looking for an overnight stay in a purpose-built fully accessible home with 24 hour Support Workers to assist you, our Staycation homes in Ballajura (for young people and adults) and Bentley (for children) are a great option. We can assist you with personal care, daily living tasks and developing life skills away from home.
If you’d like to continue living on your own or with family but just need some assistance with day-to-day living tasks, our Access Program can help. A Support Worker can come to your home and provide assistance with personal care, shopping, paying bills, cooking, cleaning, going to appointments, running errands and accessing your community. We usually recommend having a team of at least two regular Support Workers, as that way when one staff has time off, the other team member can still assist you. Having this support might mean you can continue living independently or with family for as long as you like, in your own community. We can even provide a vehicle to access your community if you choose. Support is provided for a minimum 4 hour period.
